Adding a new language to 770/N800 is very simple. Once done, you can choose it from the “Device language” list of the “Language & region” applet.
1. install extra locales, got from garage.maemo.org/projects/locales-extras
2. add the country code to gconf configuration database, e.g.
# gconftool-2 --set /apps/osso/applet/languageregional/available_languages \
--type=list --list-type=string "[zh_CN]"
--type=list --list-type=string "[zh_CN]"
an alternative way to do this is using gconf-editor.
of course, the text of UI need to be translated to this new language.
Great, is that your translation? Or there are already Chinese translate?

Could you explain how to use the extra locales and which files we should translated?

to boysmile:
I use the following steps to do zh_CN localization.
1. install locales-extras-cjk_2.3.5-2_all.deb
2. install zh_CN themes I created (for N770 only)
3. add zh_CN language
4. put the mo file into /usr/share/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES

Hi,Wolfg,
Did you try it on N800? Can you send some snapshots? it will make all UIs(menus) of the device into Chinese? Thanks.

No, I just test it on N770. I’ll post some screenshots here several days later. Current translations are based the open source po files got from https://stage.maemo.org/viewcvs.cgi/maemo/projects/haf/trunk/

Hi,wolfg, thanks.
I am newbie to Maemo, can you tell me how to do those translations and how to process to have N800 have Chinese UI?some detailed manual would be appreciated.

1. translate English po files to Chinese
2. compile po files to mo files, then copy them to /usr/shre/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES. A better way to do this is creating a debian package.
3. follow this post to make Chinese choosable in “Language & region” applet and set the device to use Chinese language. An alternative way is modifing /etc/osso-af-init/locale
4. note the file /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules is also needed to be changed to make sure that the vkb works properly.

N800 doesn’t need this zh_CN theme.
3. add zh_CN language
Exactly say, to add zh_CN language option in “Language & region” applet.
To hava Chinese UI, you need to translate po files at https://stage.maemo.org/viewcvs.cgi/maemo/projects/haf/trunk/, e.g. (maemo-desktop, hildon-fm, hildon-libs, appliaction installer, hildon-control-panel, etc.)

Hi,
I am very thankful for what you’ve done so far. I tried installing the chinese fonts and everything works as far as the system is concern. But chinese fonts do not display correctly in Media Player. Is there a way around this..?
Thanks..!

Wolfg,
I just got a Nokia 770. I search all the posts here and can not find anything about saying that it can display Trad. Chinese. How can the web browser in Nokia 770 display Trad. Chinese?
Thanks

Thanks for the great work. The virtual keyboard wastes a lot of space; the buttons can be much bigger for easy use. Better yet, use the original virtual keyboard.

Hi,
I installed your chinese font and theme and my opera on 770 can display chinese without problem. However, when I use 770 to go to news.163.com, I cannot add RSS on news.163.com. When I tried to do so the 770 told me “address invalid”. I also manually type the RSS address on 770 and get same result. Could you tell me what should I do in order to add RSS on 163.com into my RSS?

I am totally new to Linux OS and Maemo, so I probably need a lot of help from you all.
A lot of instructions above seem to discuss how to convert N770/N800 UI into Chinese. I am OK with English UI, but I’d like to know how to SEE Chinese characters in Opera Browser and TYPE Chinese pinyin in Opera Browser and any Chat application. Any ideas?
Any helps are greately appreciated. I am sure that you all are the BEST!!!

hi ann,
To see Chinese characters, you need a Chinese font. To type Chinese pinyin, you need the ported SCIM pinyin ime. Both are included in MaemoCJK package. Visit http://maemocjk.garage.maemo.org for details.

I will check the website out. I am sure that I may not fully understand everything, as I am so new to Maemo and Nokia N800. I will post some more questions if I have any. Thanks again for your help, Wolfg.

准备站好最后一班岗,帮助同事学习Ptyhon。但我不会离开Python,正相反,以后会更近了,可能会更加关注python在mobile方面的开发。 —
我近来玩一下PYTHON FOR WINCE,好像不支持中文,说编译ASCII错误。
请问WOLFG兄是怎么解决这个问题的?谢了先。
